Indian Driving Learner’s License Test

Learner’s License Eligibility & Requirements in India

Getting your Indian driving license starts with passing the learner’s test. To apply for a learner’s license (LL) in India, you must meet the following criteria:

Minimum Age Requirements

  • 16 years for non-geared two-wheelers (with parental consent)
  • 18 years for light motor vehicles (LMVs)
  • 20 years for commercial/transport vehicles

Required Documents

  • Proof of age (Birth Certificate, Aadhar Card, Passport, PAN Card, School Certificate)
  • Proof of address (Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Ration Card, Utility Bills, Passport)
  • Recent passport-size photographs with blue background
  • Medical certificate (Form 1A) for applicants over 40 years old or applying for a transport vehicle license
  • Form 2 (Application for Learner’s License)
  • Self-declaration of physical fitness (Form 1)

Medical & Health Conditions for Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to drive.
  • People with serious vision impairment, epilepsy, uncontrolled diabetes, or other severe medical conditions may be disqualified.
  • Applicants over 40 years must submit a medical certificate (Form 1A) issued by a certified medical practitioner.

Learner’s License Validity & Next Steps

  • The learner’s license is valid for 6 months (180 days) from the date of issue.
  • You must hold the learner’s license for at least 30 days before applying for the permanent driving license test.
  • The test for a permanent driving license should be taken before the learner’s license expires.
